Thanks Lee and the East-West team for a great job.

Sacred Love
Shambhu
2010 / Shambhu Ltd.
57.5 minutes

Posted at MainlyPiano.com

Sacred Love is a fascinating and inspiring collection of twelve pieces composed and performed by guitar virtuoso Shambhu and co-produced by Grammy Award-winning Windham Hill-founder Will Ackerman. Styles range from quiet meditations to Indian-jazz fusion, and some very impressive musicians join Shambhu on a wide variety of instruments. To quote Shambhu: “my work has one goal: to convey a celestial abode in music and superb musicianship that invite listeners to explore, enjoy and reflect within…. Sacred Love invites full-on, soulful listening.” While it’s true that this music won’t stay in the background, it can provide a colorful backdrop for other activities. The blending of Eastern and Western musical traditions gives Shambhu’s music a very distinctive sound, and the incredible team of Ackerman and engineer Corin Nelsen makes the quality of that sound as close to perfection as it can get.

Sacred Love opens with “Together,” a joyful and optimistic piece that features Charlie Bisharat on violin, Premik Russell Tubbs on wind synth, and Tony Levin on bass – a great beginning! “Edge of Eternal” is quieter and more subdued, and features Imaginary Road regulars Jill Haley on English horn, Eugene Friesen on cello, and Noah Wilding on wordless vocals – lovely! “Eyes of a Child” is a gorgeous guitar solo that “expresses the illumination of a child who still marvels at the beauty of simplicity and the simplicity of beauty.” My favorite track is “Natural Moment,” a lively and upbeat celebration of oneness and cultural diversity. Shambhu performs on guitars, sitar, synth pads, and kalimba backed by Tony Levin, Charlie Bisharat, Jeff Haynes (percussion), and Rocky Fretz (piano). If you can keep your body still while listening to this one, you really need to loosen up a bit! “Revelation” is another favorite. It begins as a graceful duet for guitar and cello, later adding English horn, bass, and light percussion. A slow, tranquil flow creates a musical daydream. “Maui Breeze” is as light and refreshing as its title. Claytoven Richardson (vocals) and Jeff Oster (flugelhorn) also appear on this track. “Shiva Grove” is an east/west jazz fusion with sax (George Brooks) and flute (Ravichandra Kulur) soaring over the chordal guitar foundation. “Humility” is the concluding bonus track, and is a duet for guitar and flute (Kulur). Also an east/west fusion, it conveys gratitude and humility before “the Source of Creation” and brings this exciting album to a close.

There is a 25-webisode series on the making of Sacred Love on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/shambhumusic) that is well worth checking out. The album is available from ShambhuMusic.com, Amazon, iTunes, and CD Baby. Recommended!

“Sacred Love” review featured in the November 2010 issue of Common Ground magazine.

On his stunning debut CD, Shambhu performs music of the heart, in an exquisite fusion of contemporary instrumental and indo-jazz that listeners will find healing, soulful and abundantly enjoyable. Shambhu’s mastery of the guitar and compositional elegance enables full-bodied expressions of nuance and subtlety while engaging audiences in deep spirit. “Sacred Love” offers an endless panorama of luminous music that pours from Shambhu’s guitar and creative vision, lifting us with billows of heartfelt, spacious and ever so inviting inspiration. This is a masterful, melodic and magical expression overflowing with exquisite compositions played to perfection with guest appearances by today’s finest musicians. The songs transport me to places I have only dreamed of — this tuneful journey has left me spellbound!

Shambhu’s guitar playing is exquisite, powerful and delicate at the same time, while redefining a new standard for instrumental music. It’s a pioneering work that captures the whole contemporary music sound – where it has come from, where it is now, and what’s possible. It includes heart, vision, dazzling playing, and endless imagery. People often think of instrumental music as something that dwells in the background. Shambhu’s music invites full-on, soulful listening and continually draws you in deeper and deeper, revealing your own core. Shambhu collaborated on the CD with the legendary Grammy Award winners Will Ackerman (co-producer and Windham Hill founder) and Corin Nelsen (recording and mix engineer). Musicians featured on the CD include: Tony Levin on bass (Peter Gabriel), George Brooks on sax (John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Larry Coryell), Ravichandra Kulur on flute (Ravi and Anoushka Shankar), cellist Eugene Friesen (Paul Winter Consort), Jeff Haynes on percussion (Pat Metheny), Celso Alberti on drums (Stevie Winwood), Premik Tubbs on flute (John McLaughlin and Santana), Todd Boston on sarod, Jeff Oster on flugelhorn, vocalists Noah Wilding and Claytoven Richardson, as well as other amazing artists.

I have known Will Ackerman since the early Windham Hill days in 1980. Throughout his own masterful catalog, time-honored compositions and innovative releases (such as “Passage” or “Hearing Voices”) he has provided a level of artistry and excellence that sets him apart. His production work, notably over the past decade, has helped numerous fine artists who had not yet found their musical voice discover the path to the best work of their career. With Shambhu, he encountered an artist that already knew his way.

Will’s comments: “It’s utterly true that I love that this music, while truly spiritual, allows for unfettered joy as well as contemplation. There is a brilliant range to Shambhu’s music; moments when the mood is achingly tender and meditative and times when the music just grooves. Not relegating himself simply to introspection, Shambhu creates music which embraces and celebrates all aspects of life which ultimately feels very profound to me.”

That is part of why I feel “Sacred Love” may well be the best project Will has been involved in, which is not to be said or taken lightly.

Each song is its own journey and sound painting with unique colors, shades, rhythms and vistas from Shambhu’s inner experience. The songs flow with a fresh weaving of acoustic, world, and Indian musical styles and grooves. The earth rhythms make you want to dance, and the celestial melodies are elevators into a heavenly realm. The beauty of nature is expressed in ways that are everywhere evident. Shambhu is a Sanskrit name meaning “Source of Happiness”. He has performed over the years with Carlos Santana, Narada Michael Walden, Premik Tubbs, and played on Whitney Houston’s multi-platinum album, “Whitney.” He studied meditation for three decades with the renowned mystic Sri Chinmoy. Blessed and inspired by the contributions of an amazing assemblage of brilliant musicians, the songs show themselves over time, some immediately, others in surprising, unplanned ways. It’s a “soul-elevating journey through music into the deep recesses of your heart.”

I am certain you’ll agree the results are a musical playground and landscape for superb and spacious listening: peaceful, moving, and shining with bright light and illumination from start to finish. “Sacred Love” is one of the best CDs of the year (or any year!)”.

The lush sounds tell each story and the notes in the CD booklet are provided to bring you out to the other side, a guided meditation if you will. I put this on in the morning a few times while getting my work day started and it has does wonders for my attitude. Rather than cranking up some rock tunes and getting all wired I have recently taken the lighter path and it has served me well. Working stress free is much more productive. I somehow think that this music was not meant for people to work along to but you do whatever works for you and if you can use this music as a positive tool then so be it!

There are 12 tracks on this CD and it is put together with the utmost care and professionalism, it is truly a work of art for those seeking enlightenment of any kind through music. I give the artist all the credit in the world for taking time away from his profession to complete his lifelong dream and then share it with those open enough to receive it. Shambhu is a truly blessed individual with a gift he is willing to share with the world. Sacred Love Feel The Journey is a lesson in self acceptance and the road to peace within and I am glad I found it.

The music production process can be incredibly complex for independent musical artists.

Now music creators can check out the ShambhuMusic Channel on YouTube for a look into the writing, recording, mixing, mastering, CD design and promotion processes for Shambhu’s debut CD, “Sacred Love.” The videos cover all elements of the production challenges that indie artists face in creating and publishing music.

“Sacred Love,” by acclaimed guitarist and composer Shambhu, features gorgeous songs, profound performances and superior sound production that left me breathlessly satisfied.

This debut by Shambhu features an all-star cast of musicians, including bassist Tony Levin, cellist Eugene Friesen, drummer Celso Alberti, saxist George Brooks, and flutist Ravichandra Kulur. The CD was co-produced by Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman and mixed by Corin Nelsen.

Each YouTube video features recording sessions with a different artist. Shambhu recorded acoustic guitar tracks first. Then he layered on cello, percussion, bass, English horn, violin, sax, flute and other instruments onto the tracks.

Once all the recordings were complete, he mixed and mastered the CD. Recording and mixing took place at Imaginary Road Studios in Windham County, Vermont. The CD was mastered by Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering.

The CD was co-produced by Windham Hill Records Founder Will Ackerman and Shambhu. Corin Nelsen handled engineering and mixing.

All of these artists and production people are featured in “The Making of Sacred Love” on YouTube on the ShambhuMusic channel.

The 8-page booklet included with the CD also references the YouTube channel webisode listings where you can watch the CD being recorded. So you can hear a song and then see it being recorded in various sessions.

“It might be the first CD ever to feature YouTube webisode listings,” said Shambhu. “Being able to watch the CD being made really brings the entire production process to life.”

Watch “The Making of Sacred Love” on YouTube. For more information visit Shambhu Music and Reverb Nation.

Yesterday I did my third listening party for “Sacred Love,” my new CD. I wanted to share some of the comments below.

The CD is in its final rough mix. It’s an enjoyable listen. It works for audio enthusiasts. Folks who love melody and great performances. It’s multi-cultural with diverse artists. And it’s heartfelt with richness, elegance and nuance in each note.

Several listeners are elevating the experience to healing. For others its a contemplative, soulful introspection. Music is such an ideal platform for healing and self-knowledge. So honored to be there with you in these experiences where you add your love and inspiration to the music.

Here are some early comments.

“We have spent the morning listening, uplifted on the sound waves. Artistry and joy and sacred love flow through each piece. Your fellow musicians are each their own revelation. This album is amazing.” (~B.B., Tallahassee, FL)

“Shambhu is a wonderful musician and being. His music takes me back to some of my earliest guitar heroes, Robbie Basho and Sandy Bull and of course, John McLaughlin. Shambhu’s style and playing are awesome and will have a wide appeal.” (~D.T., Tallahassee, FL)

“Profound. Amazing!” (~D.L., Tiburon, CA)

“All I can say is Wow. I almost cried…You must be so proud of this project. Listening to your music is tremendously satisfying for me – partly because I just plain like it – and partly because it’s from you.” (~A.V., Merrick, NY)

“I am taken aback by how stirring it is to the soul. Each song took me to a new place in my mind and soul. Great stuff!” (~A.M., Farmingdale, NY)

“Sacred Love is way off the charts!” (~A.B, Montana)

“I’m spellbound…” (L.B., Corte Madera, CA)

“Shambhu’s guitar playing is exquisite…powerful and delicate at the same time. At each point there’s a full bodied presentation of each note that embodies a deep consciousness in terms of the Source and display and presence of the musical field that one is experiencing. There is a depth there and Shambhu mined it.” (A.U., Sebastopol, CA)

“The album is delicate and courageous. Each time I listen, I find new gifts in it.” (D.L., San Jose, CA)

“It’s got it all: achingly lush beauty, spiritual yearning from the depths of the heart, a rich tapestry of sounds from a plethora of extremely talented musicians (including your good self) who were obviously firing on all cylinders and quite simply cooking on every beat of every song – it’s self-evident that this CD was a labor of joyful love on everyone’s part. I really don’t know how you do it, but please, please, keep on doing it!” (U.T., Queens, NY)

“Shambhu Vineberg’s latest album “Sacred Love” is literally a master-piece collection…moving, inspiration, and intriguing–something called soulful music.” (V.K., India)

“Sacred Love is an exquisite gift to children and families. Whether for relaxation, rest or focused study time – this music is a source of calm and inspiration. The latest brain research clearly shows that students perform best when they are well rested and not stressed. The tracks on Sacred Love are ideally suited to help students remain in a relaxed frame of mind – and spirit – for optimum performance and personal fulfillment. For parents it is a perfect respite from the hectic energy of the day. I only wish this soothing music could be played each in every household – what a peaceful world it would be! ”
-(A.K. Chevy Chase, MD)
